Do you have those moments when you are just craving some comfort food? This happens for me quite often. Usually it’s in response to some stress, exhaustion or other trigger. In those times I find these healthy comfort food recipes a great resource.
For many of us, we find comfort in food. And it may be difficult to come to terms with that fact. In many weight loss programs this type of eating is often discouraged or considered a huge red flag because it is often associated with high calorie meals, overeating and off-limits foods. But it’s natural in times of difficulty to look for comfort and sometimes that comes from eating. For me comfort in foods reminds me of home, my family, fond memories, my mom and much more. Those are times when I felt safe, loved and comfortable.
Practicing intuitive eating has allowed me to make peace with the fact that I find comfort in food while at the same time helping me work towards making food choices that my body wants and needs as well as those that provide me with emotional comfort when it’s needed. All without feeling guilty about allowing myself to feel that way and also with less bingeing and overeating.
How we each define comfort food is deeply personal and everyone has their own list of favorites that they rely on when the craving hits. For me, these foods typically are some version of creamy, hearty dishes or simply some combination of my favorite foods. Many of these dishes feature flavors that I grew up eating at home and with my family which is likely why I feel comfort when eating them.
Here is a collection of my favorite healthy comfort food recipes that have appeared here on the blog. I hope you find some inspiration here for your next meal.
