Place the pitted dates in a bowl and pour hot water over the top to cover, about 1 cup. Let sit for 1 hour so dates can soften.

Transfer the soaked dates to a blender with a slotted spoon and add a tiny bit of liquid. Blend to puree the dates. Add more soaking liquid if needed, but just enough to puree the dates.

Add the tofu to the pureed dates and blend again to mix well. Blend until paste is smooth.

Combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, oil and vanilla in a mixing bowl.

Add the contents of the blender to the other ingredients in the mixing bowl and stir well to combine.

Add the pecans and chocolate chips and stir just to combine.

Transfer the brownie batter to an 9 x 9 or equivalent oiled or sprayed baking dish. Place into a preheated 350° F oven and bake for 20-25 minutes.
