Notes
Want perfectly cooked oats? Whether you use steel-cut oats or old-fashioned oats, the right liquid-to-oats ratio is extremely important. This recipe is written for steel-cut oats using a 3 cups of water to the 1 cup of oats. If you use old fashioned oats you will need to use 1 ½ cups of oats to the 3 cups of liquid in the recipe. Undercooked oats are hard and difficult to eat.Experiment with flavors and try nutmeg or another warm spice with the cinnamon. You can even try a splash of vanilla extract for more warmth and an ultra comforting breakfast.Make sure to let it cook long enough. Crock pots are perfect for low and slow. In this case, it’s also great for making the recipe ahead of time.Cooking overnight: I suggest using a timer if you plan to cook the oatmeal overnight. In all my recipe testing it never took longer than 4 hours to cook the oatmeal. You can let it cook longer but would need to more liquid so it doesn't dry out.
