½cupnut butteroptional
11ouncesdark chocolate bar70% cacao or higher (320 grams)
Prepare a baking tray or sheet pan with parchment or wax paper.
Peel the bananas. Cut off ends to make flat slices. Slice bananas into 6-7 pieces trying to keep flat edges. You may need to trim off excess to make them flat banana slices.
Place banana pieces on prepared sheet pan and insert skewers or straws into each piece of banana and place on tray. You can also skip the skewers or straws if you prefer.
Top each piece of banana with a spoonful of nut butter. Place tray in freezer for about 60-90 minutes or until bananas are frozen.
Place chocolate in a bowl to melt the chocolate. You can do this a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave or in metal bowl or heat-safe bowl using a double boiler. If you use the microwave, do it in short intervals so you don’t burn the chocolate. As it melts, stir with a spatula or spoon until it is smooth.
Remove bananas from freezer and dip in chocolate coat all sides. Allow excess to chocolate to drip off into bowl.
Sprinkle desired toppings on while chocolate is wet. When all are dipped return to freezer for 10-15 minutes to set the chocolate.
Notes
Nutrition is based on chocolate and bananas only and doesn't include the toppings you choose. The nutrition may also change slightly depending on the brand of chocolate bar you choose. Depending on the size of your bananas you may end up with 24-36 pieces.
Storing: Store in the freezer in an airtight container with parchment between the layers. Let them sit for 5 minutes or so before serving to allow the banana to thaw out slightly.
Serving: Enjoy these as a healthy snack, healthy dessert, party treat, or an after dinner sweet.
Use a Thick Nut Butter: Thicker nut butters are easier to work with and don't slide off the banana. If yours is on the thin side place it in the fridge to firm up a bit before adding on top of the bananas.
To Skewer or Not? I find chocolate-covered bananas on straws or skewers are much easier to dip. If you prefer them without use a fork or clean fingers to dip just the top of the bananas rather than the entire banana.
Excess Chocolate. Let any extra chocolate drip off and if possible slide the bottom of the banana along the edge of the bowl to remove the excess on the bottom.
Add Sprinkles Quickly. Make sure you add your toppings while the chocolate is wet. This means you may need to work in small batches.
