Meal prep is no doubt my number one healthy habit that I share here on the blog. It is a healthy that I have actually been able to develop and maintain over the years. I am sharing meal prep ideas and recipes with you today because I know from personal experience that it works, and in my opinion, it is crucial to establishing healthy eating habits!! Why? Simply because when you meal prep you always have a plan, items prepped and ingredients in the house that allow you to prepare healthy, nutritious meals.
There are a few simple things you can do to start meal prepping today!! And if you need some ideas for recipes, below you will find 10 of my favorite recipes that are perfect for meal prep!
Decide what to cook
The first step in meal prep is deciding what to cook. There are TONS of resources out there to help you find new and simple recipes to prepare. One of them is right here on the blog!!! If you want to read more about strategies I use to find new recipes, check out my post, Tips for using social media and the web for meal planning.
When deciding what to cook I like to think of things that are quick and easy, can be made ahead or will make a big batch that I can eat during the week. My meal prep almost always includes a soup. I like soups because they are easy to make plus I can portion them out and freeze it to use it as needed.
And, if you continue reading, you will find a list of some of my favorite recipes from the blog that are perfect for meal prep. Most are ready in less than an hour and can either be used to carry to work or eat at home.
Keep a well-stocked pantry of healthy plant-based foods
I suggest having your pantry and freezer stocked with ingredients such as legumes, whole grains and frozen veggies so that even when you don’t have a plan you can easily toss together something quickly. Some quick cook ingredients I always have on hand include:
- Brown rice
- Whole wheat pasta
- Frozen varieties of my favorite veggies
- Canned diced or crushed tomatoes
Spend an hour or two prepping on the weekend
It really doesn’t take that long if you choose the right recipes and have ingredients on hand. When you first start meal prepping, you may want to start out by writing up a quick timeline of sorts to figure out what items you can cook at the same time. For example, if you want to prep up a grain and some lentils to use during the week, you can actually cook these at the same time and save yourself half the time. At the beginning, you may find at first it takes you longer but eventually you learn how to arrange your cooking list so that you can reduce the amount of time.
